What’s Going on This October?

The Gandhi Peace Network of North Dakota will celebrate October as Peace Month in cooperation with various Bismarck organizations, schools and churches.

Saturday Oct 2nd marks the 141st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian apostle of peace and non-violence.

Over the past several years the Peace Network has dedicated Peace Poles around Bismarck in cooperation with churches, parks and schools. Around this time, schools and churches are encouraged to rededicate the Peace Pole and walk for World Peace.

The 16th annual Gandhi Peace dinner will be held on Saturday, October 2nd at First Presbyterian Church in Bismarck (214 E. Thayer Avenue).

Carry out is at 5pm and the sit down dinner begins at 6pm. Checks for $30 are to be made payable to Gandhi Peace Network of North Dakota. Reservations can be made by email to jjart@btinet.net or by phone at 223-4234

The dinner features foods from different parts of India. The soup is Dahi ka khata from Rajasthan made from yogurt, gram flour, fenugreek seeds and black mustard seeds. The appetizer is Dhal ki pakodi from Jaipur made from mixture of different organic beans
grown right here in North Dakota, garlic, coriander seeds and fennel seeds. It is served with apple chutney and dhania (cilantro) chutney.

The entree is punjabi podhina murgh, boneless chicken breast cooked with onion, garlic, tomatoes, fresh mint locally grown and Aruna Seth’s special murgh masala. Muttar Paneer is the vegetable – fresh green peas and home made cheese cooked in aromatic sauce with fresh chopped ginger.

Hyderabadi Basmati rice cooked with “panch foran” spices including black mustard seeds, kala jeera, kadi patha, cayenne pepper and cardamom. The traditional whole wheat bread is phulka (chapathi) puffed over open fire and brushed with Ghee (clarified butter).

The dessert is khopra burfee – a milk based desert made from fresh shredded coconut and cardamom. Seth’s own chai masala tea will be the beverage.

This year we fondly remember Shri D.P. Julka, Shrimati P. Julka, Mr. P. N. Seth and board member Therm Kaldahl for their commitment to peace. They have been the inspiration behind this network over 16 years.

Local community members and children will present a short program.
